About Wang Wu
My works of the water-based woodblock print are meant to show my attempt to re-thinking traditional Chinese ink painting. The subjects I chose mostly relate to Chinese literati painting motifs, such as Four Gentlemen (plum blossom, orchid, bamboo, and chrysanthemum), flowers, birds, landscapes, fish and certain animals. I also portray classic maidens, still life, and immediate impression through the unique old form of album leaves.
My intention with woodcut prints is not to create a new visual appearance but to reach the spiritual summit of the historical models and to find an implicit style of conveying my personal aesthetics or inner affection. For me, artistic creation is a faithful reflection of one’s real-life state.
Another priceless treasure that woodcut prints gave me is my working spirit. In the process of engraving and printing, I feel like a real laborer completely focusing on hard menial work. Art is more than a visual means to deliver ideas and philosophical thoughts. It also conveys deep sentiments that words cannot clearly describe. I do not want the audience read any moralized discourse in my work. I do wish they could find inspiration or happiness in my prints.
The pieces I have done are also sincere tributes to woodcut and art working. While I look back at the rich tradition of classical Chinese art masterpieces, I know I will never fear the lacking of cultural nurture. The more challenge I face in renewing the literati tradition, the more confident and energetic I become in creating new woodcut prints in the future.
